Ambassadors

Ryan Crawford

Ryan is a husband, father of two, full time worker and ultra runner.  BYU Australia’s vision is to create a community for the everyday runner who is out there balancing all of the “real” life stuff while making time for their passion and pushing themselves to find their limits and we couldn’t think of a better Ambassador for our community.

Ryan catapulted into the ultra scene in 2018 with a win at Dusk to Dawn 100km after a long stint as a professional Muay Thai fighter. Since then, he’s gone on to have wins at Wild Horse, Glasshouse, BVRT, Hares & Hounds and Butter24.

Ryan has an extremely impressive running resume for someone who has only been running for approximately 5 years, but for him, it’s not about the numbers.  For Ryan, it is about personal growth and finding his own limits. He’s on a journey to keep pushing his limits to see what he can achieve.

Those of us who have had the privilege of sharing races with Ryan will notice every time is that he is always approachable and takes the time to have a chat and offer advice.

Ryan is the current Australian 200 mile record holder (BVRT 2021) and the former Australian Backyard Ultra record holder (Clint Eastwood 2022 – 59 yards).

Ryan has his sights set on the Barkley Marathons and Badwater.

His greatest running moment to date is running the 200 miler (where he broke the Australian record) with his wife, Michelle, who paced him when he was in a dark hole.  They suffered in the rain/mud to conquer the challenge.

Ryan takes inspiration from runners such as Goggins and Haynes.  He is motivated by finding what is truly possible for himself and he wants to leave behind a legacy for his boys to follow so they can see that anything is possible if they want it.

For him, running is another form of body movement to stay healthy and fit but long distance running for him is more meditational and body/mind transformation.

When asked what it feels like to run for days on end, he says it’s really tough but fills you with energy and strength. He says once you overcome the mind, there really is pure magic from the inside and it allows you to become stronger.  He says the toughest parts of racing is fighting that voice in your head when you start to get sore and tired.
